Cerebral Palsy Cymru receives emergency funding
October 15 2020
Because of the immediate and significant financial impact on the charity, at the start of lockdown we had to furlough the majority of operations, fundraising and shops staff and a large proportion of our therapists straight away.
With a small team of therapists remaining we rapidly adapted our ‘hands on’ therapy service to an online one via video call and continued to provide therapy sessions to children and families who needed us. However we urgently needed to increase our capacity to support as many children as possible.
The emergency funding of £99,622 over 1 year from The National Lottery Community Fund has enabled us to bring two therapists back from furlough meaning we can now provide nearly 40 extra video consultations each month.
Jenny Carroll, Centre Director and Consultant Physiotherapist said, ‘We are extremely grateful to The National Lottery Community Fund for supporting our essential service in this way. We know that the earlier a child who has, or is at risk of having, cerebral palsy receives specialist therapy the greater impact that we can make on their future outcomes. It is vital therefore that we have enough staff resources to provide our essential service to children and families living with cerebral palsy. Since lockdown, we have had 20 referrals of babies born in lockdown needing our help, as well as those children who already attend our centre. This funding has enabled us to increase our capacity to help meet this need.’
