Information for parents and carers

We are now offering the opportunity for families with children over the age of 2 1/2 to access our private therapy service.

In the past, we have received lots of enquiries about how we can support older children and we are therefore delighted that we are now in a position to offer this additional opportunity and choice for children, young people, parents and their families.

Where appropriate, we offer the opportunity for families to book private therapy sessions for their child. These sessions are typically for any child over the age of 2 and a half who has been given a diagnosis of cerebral palsy.

All our private therapy sessions will be conducted by one of our highly specialist therapists who all have extensive experience working with children and young people who have cerebral palsy. The sessions will focus on your child or young person's needs, helping them to move towards greater levels of participation in the things they need and want to do, and will build your confidence in carrying out activities at home.

We are pleased to be able to offer therapy sessions at our Children’s Centre in Cardiff, or alternatively, we can carry out the sessions virtually so that you can attend remotely from your home. Domiciliary visits may also be possible at an additional cost.

Below you can find out more information about the different self-funded therapy sessions that we offer, and how to go about accessing this service.

What is an Initial Consultation?

An initial Consultation is an initial session of up to 1 ½ hours in length which includes a discussion and assessment of you and your child or young person's current needs, treatment, and advice from one of our specialist therapists. It will also include a brief summary letter. These sessions are recommended for children who are new to our service, or who have not attended for some time.

What is a Single Therapy Session?

A single treatment session lasts for 45 minutes and will include verbal advice and suggestions for you to continue at home. This is suitable for children or young people known to us and who have attended the centre within the last year.

What is a 5 session Therapy Block?

Our 5 Session Intensive Blocks consist of five 45-minute therapy sessions over several days. We would aim to book this over a three-to-four-week period.

Intensive periods of therapy often provide you and your child or young person the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of their needs and consolidate changes under the guidance of a therapist.

What is a Therapy Report?

A written report can be provided on request and will include a summary of what was discussed in your therapy session as well as a record of suggested activities with which to continue at home.

Cost: £500

(Please note: no written report will be provided unless requested.)

Is a private therapy session right for me and my child?

Our private therapy sessions are typically for children over the age of 2 and a half who have been given a diagnosis of cerebral palsy.

Our highly specialist therapists all have extensive experience working with children and young people who have cerebral palsy and can tailor the sessions to ensure they are age-appropriate and accessible for all abilities.

If you would like to discuss your child or young person's needs and the most appropriate option for therapy, we would be happy to discuss this with you further.

After our first therapy session, I left Cerebral Palsy Cymru’s children’s centre with something nobody had previously dared give me for my little boy. I left with hope.
